MULTAN:

A four-year-old girl was taken to a hospital in Vehari on Thursday after she was sexually assaulted allegedly by the chief cleric on her first day at a seminary. Doctors treating her said that her condition was critical.

Meerapur police said the suspect had been arrested.

The girl’s father, a resident of Nawan Shehr in Mailsi, said in the FIR that he had dropped his daughter at the Shaheedanwala seminary in the neighbourhood.

He said more than 70 children from five nearby villages were enrolled at the seminary.

He said it was the girl’s first day and the chief cleric had asked him to drop her at his office. The father was told that he (cleric) would introduce her to other children.

He said when he went to pick her up at noon, he was told that his daughter was in the chief cleric’s office. The office was locked and the cleric missing. He said he broke into the room and found the child lying unconscious.

She was taken to the district headquarters hospital, where doctors treating her said that her condition was critical. Doctors later said she had undergone a surgery.

Dr Tahira Parveen at the DHQ hospital told The Express Tribune that the girl’s medico-legal examination confirmed rape.

District Police Officer Sadiq Ali Dogar said that a police team arrested the suspect from another seminary where he had been hiding.

He said the suspect had been shifted to an undisclosed location on account of the neighbours’ threats of violence. He said two other clerics from the madrassa were also reported to have gone missing after the incident.

Residents of the area staged a protest demonstration and announced a boycott of all seminaries.

Pakistan’s shame

While the New Delhi gang rape case has resulted in outrage that has spilled into the streets across the border, the plight of women who have faced rape and sexual assault in Pakistan has been largely confined to formulaic articles in the press, slow-moving cases in the courts, and frequent dropped charges due to bribes, threats of further violence and family pressure on the victim to avoid further ‘shame’.

In 2012, The Express Tribune covered over 150 reports on cases of rape and their follow-ups across the country, but the actual number of incidents is likely much higher as the stigma of rape, treatment meted out by police officials and low prosecution rates makes this crime largely unreported.

Every day we read of very young boys and girls getting raped, often gang raped in Pakistan. All of them are so violently raped that they become unconscious and end up in hospitals. Is this seasonal? I mean some sort of season like when street dogs get in heat. Never heard of even one culprit brought to court or punished in Pakistan. Has Pakistan’s courts punished even one culprit for rape, particularly rape of very young boys and girls, in the last 10 or 20 years or ever since Pakistan came into existence? Ask Oria Maqbool Jan and he would say that the rapes in USA, Latin America and Europe are much more than in Pakistan.

4 witnesses are required when some one accuses two people of having done zinnah, incase the person cannot prove these two guilty he/she are ordered to be lashed. This is because to make it very hard for one’s dignity to be maligned.

Incase of rape, any other evidence which proves rape is acceptable by the Qazi and the Qazi has authority to order even death sentence as maximum punishment.

    Let us stop maligning Islam.

No police, no FIR, no hearings , no prosecution no defense, no court adjournments , no delay in justice, The consequence will be swift and befitting and only common man will deliver it on the road.

    @SK:
As I think, it is not lack of laws that are protecting the criminals in Pakistan. There may be deficiencies in law but it is mainly the judges and courts that are failing to deliver justice and they are doing it deliberately. Law enforcement agencies take their cue from the courts. Laws are lacking as far as minorities are concerned but they adequate to a good extent as far as crimes are concerned. These rapes have no connection to religion or sharia laws but the criminals exploit religion to get away. A mulla knows that when he is caught, he can bring in religion to escape. The victims live in fear because they know that the judges will not like to offend the mulla if he brings in religion and in most cases side with the criminals due to their belief that it is their duty to protect the mulllas to save the religion. Why I think like this? I shall tell you. The other day I was watching Parvez Hoodbhoy, Ansar Abbasi and Oria Maqbool Jan in Kamran Shahid’s TV discussions on Malala’s book. Ansar Abbasi and Oria Maqbhool Jan were pushing Parvez Hoodbhoy to tell the viewers as to what he thinks of the Ahmedis. I do not know if Parvez Hoodbhoy is an Ahmedi or not but the way they pushed him to air his views publicly on TV was very bad. They both did it as they know if Parvez Hoodbhoy says something in support of Ahmedis, he shall be killed by the so many religious forces. Ansar Abbasi and Oria Maqbhool Jan know what the religious extremists can do and were playing on it. Media in Pakistan, claims that they are moderate in religious views but bring in these insane extremists like Ansar Abbasi and Oria Maqbhool Jan as their guests and introduce them as intellectuals. Media is promoting these extremist and twisted views of Islam. 2 years ago, we saw live conversion during Maya Khan’s Ramzan TV special. We also saw Dr. Shahid Masood prominently on the TV show. My view is that both Media and the courts are promoting twisted Islam and extremists. As you say, the people will come out on the streets one day, sooner or later, and deliver their own justice not just on the mullas but also on the media and judges. Raymond Davis should have been freed on some sort of country to country agreement/understanding and not on shariya laws. This misuse of religion, the brainchild of the then Pakistani Prime Minister Gillani, has led to freeing of Sharukh Jatoi smiling with a “V” sign. Bringing in religion in the case of Dr. Afridi and claiming that he ran a fake polio vaccination camp and polio vaccinations are the yahoodi plot to reduce the muslim population has hurt many children in Pakistan. Media has never tried to guide the population correctly but has in fact encouraged the population to believe in these conspiracy theories.

As someone above stated, it is only a matter of time before someone takes the law in his or her hands. I live in the U.S. and in Texas, recently, a man beat a man to death who had molested his five-year-old daughter. We must always strive to follow the rule of law. However, when the rule of law does not bring justice to the victim and his or her family, it is fully expected that someone will eventually handle the situation themselves.
