Image of mistreatment of maids in Karachi restaurant goes viral

An image was posted recently on a social media page, 'Karachi Food Diaries' to report the mistreatment of domestic help in the city.

The posted image claimed to show a family enjoying a meal at a restaurant as their domestic help stood on the side and took care of the child.

The post was then also shared on Twitter and criticized the family for allegedly not feeding the two girls with the child. The post was then retweeted over 1000 times.

Although the image portrays the domestic help just walking around with the child, there was much debate around whether the maids had already eaten and were just walking around with the restless child.

Those who shared the post were also caught up in the debate and were criticised for sharing the image without the family's permission.

Doha based Al Jazeera also picked up on the incident and pointed out that similar treatment of domestic help was common across South Asia and in Gulf countries.
