LAHORE: A full-bench of the Lahore High Court on Monday granted the federal and Punjab governments two-weeks to submit their replies on a petition challenging the legality of the one-man tribunal inquiring into the Model Town incident.

The bench, comprising Justice Khalid Mehmood Khan, Justice Anawarul Haq and Justice Abdus Sattar Asghar, is hearing several petitions questioning the legality of the tribunal formed under Justice Ali Akbar Najfi.

Law officers, on behalf of both governments, sought more time to submit the replies of the respective governments when the hearing started.

Subsequently, the bench adjourned the hearing till December 1.

Advocate Aftab Ahmad Bajwa had filed a petition stating that the constitution of the tribunal comprising a judge of the superior court was against the honour of the judiciary. He complained that recommendations from judicial commissions constituted in the past had yet to be implemented.

The petitioner claimed that the government repeatedly requests judicial authorities to constitute commissions and inquiry tribunals and uses them as a shield to protect their wrong doings.

PMLn is doing the right thing. The court needs to differentiate between malicious and actual cases. This case needs to be dismissed.
