The biopic Christy, telling the story of professional boxer Christy Martin, opened to a disappointing $1.3 million on Nov. 7, ranking among the worst wide releases for films in over 2,000 theaters.

Following the box office results, Ruby Rose, who was initially in talks to star in the film, criticized Sydney Sweeney, who ultimately played Martin.

“The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing,” Rose wrote in a social media post. “I was attached to play Cherry… Losing roles happens all the time, but this one hurt. You’re a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better.”

Rose also condemned Sweeney’s comments after the release, saying the actor’s PR statements downplayed the film’s poor reception.

Sweeney, known for her role in Euphoria, defended her performance and the film’s message, emphasizing the story of survival, courage, and hope, and highlighting the awareness it raised for domestic violence.

Christy Martin herself praised Sweeney’s portrayal, noting that the actress captured the toughness and determination of her character rather than glamour.

“She got to be this totally different person that none of you expected,” Martin said at the Toronto Film Festival in September.

The dispute comes amid ongoing scrutiny over Sweeney, including her American Eagle jeans ad campaign and her political affiliation, which drew public attention.

The situation highlights the intense pressure and attention female actors face when bringing real-life figures to the big screen.
