Eric Bauza discusses Toad General role and cut scenes from 'Super Mario Bros Movie'
Eric Bauza reveals Toad General inspiration and details about cut Diddy Kong scenes

Voice actor Eric Bauza has shared new details about his role in The Super Mario Bros. Movie and its sequel, along with insights into scenes that were ultimately removed from the original film.
Bauza, known for voicing multiple animated characters, portrayed Toad General in the 2023 film and reprises the role in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The character stands out among other Toads due to a deeper voice and more authoritative presence.
According to Bauza, the direction for the role was clear from the outset. “Toad General was always described as no-nonsense, all high-stakes, everything is serious. He shouldn't sound cute. He should not sound like every other adorable Toad.”
He added that his performance drew inspiration from actor Keith David, noting the importance of vocal resonance in conveying authority.
The character’s distinct portrayal has prompted reactions from fans, some of whom questioned differences from established figures in the Mario franchise.
In addition to Toad General, Bauza voiced other characters in the original film, including Diddy Kong. He revealed that the character initially had a larger role before being reduced during editing.
“I was Diddy Kong, who had a much bigger part, by the way, but they cut him down. He was originally Donkey Kong's hypeman, like in WWE wrestling, but they cut his scene entirely.”
Bauza also recorded lines for Yoshi during production, although he noted uncertainty about whether his version was used in the final cut.
Reflecting on his connection to the franchise, Bauza said he grew up playing Mario games across multiple platforms and typically chose Mario as his preferred character.
