Matthew McConaughey says he 'exiled' himself to Peru with no electricity when fame got too much
During his stay, McConaughey lived simply and connected with locals who knew him only as Mateo

Matthew McConaughey is opening up about the drastic step he took after his rapid rise to fame in the 1990s.
The Oscar-winning actor revealed that he once “exiled” himself from Hollywood and spent 22 days in Peru without electricity in an effort to reconnect with his identity.
Speaking on the No Magic Pill podcast, McConaughey said he travelled under the name “Mateo” after feeling overwhelmed by the sudden attention that followed his breakout roles in Dazed and Confused and A Time to Kill.
“I needed to get my feet on the ground,” he said. “I needed to find it, to check the validation. I knew I had it, I just had to go prove it again.”
McConaughey admitted he was struggling to distinguish between his authentic self and the public image that came with fame.
During his stay, he lived simply and connected with locals who knew him only as Mateo, not as a movie star. By the end of the trip, he said the emotional goodbyes reaffirmed that his sense of self was rooted in who he was as a person rather than his celebrity status.
The actor described the first 12 days as difficult, but said the latter part of the journey brought clarity and peace.
McConaughey has spoken before about taking extended solo retreats, including time spent alone in the desert while working on his book Poems & Prayers.
His reflections offer a glimpse into how he navigated the pressures of fame and ultimately reconnected with the person he was before Hollywood changed his life.
