Superman will begin streaming on HBO Max on September 19, just weeks after its digital release, with the date first teased by David Corenswet before being confirmed by director James Gunn.

The DCU film, which grossed more than $615 million worldwide, marked the franchise’s new direction under Gunn and introduced audiences to Corenswet as Clark Kent. It was met with positive reception from both critics and fans and set up future projects including Supergirl, Lanterns, and Clayface.

Superman was released early on digital platforms on August 15. Gunn later explained that the decision was not due to its theatrical performance but to give audiences the chance to watch before the premiere of Peacemaker Season 2, which continues the storyline directly.

The official HBO Max release date was confirmed on Threads, but not before Corenswet appeared to leak it himself. The actor posted a selfie with the film’s streaming screen visible in the background, captioning it with: “Doing my best Eve Teschmacher impression,” a reference to Sara Sampaio’s character in the film, who cleverly leaked information to Jimmy Olsen through casual photos.

The timing of the release aligns closely with Peacemaker. Episode 5 of the new season airs this week, and critics were only given access to the first half of the series. Gunn has kept Episodes 6 to 8 under wraps, sparking speculation that they may feature a cameo from Superman or Lex Luthor.

With Gunn continuing to map out future instalments, the early arrival of the film on HBO Max is positioned as a bridge into upcoming projects in the restructured cinematic universe.
