Jennifer Aniston credits her beloved late dog, Norman, to her time on the iconic sitcom Friends. During an appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Wednesday, September 10, the actress revealed that she adopted Norman after he appeared on the show.
“I’ve always had rescue dogs,” Aniston told Colbert. “My first dog, actually, was Norman, whose name is tattooed on my foot. Normie, I actually got from the show Friends. He was on Friends.”
Colbert, joking about missing out on the popular sitcom, replied, “The dog was on Friends? You know, I auditioned for Friends and never got on.”
Aniston recalled Norman's appearance in Season 2, Episode 6 — titled “The One With the Baby on the Bus” — where characters Joey and Chandler accidentally leave Ross’s baby, Ben, on a city bus. As they run through the streets of New York searching for him, they pass by a dog walker handling multiple dogs. “Norman was one of those dogs,” Aniston explained.
Curious about the dogs on set, Aniston asked the animal trainers if any were available for adoption. “They said, ‘Well, we actually have a dog who we’re going to retire because he’s very stubborn and doesn’t do what we tell him, and he never hits his mark,’” she shared. “So, I retired him, and then, he became mine.” Norman was just one year old at the time.
Norman, a Welsh Corgi–Terrier mix, passed away at age 15 in 2011. Aniston later shared another dog, Dolly, a white German Shepherd, with her ex-husband Justin Theroux. Dolly died in 2019 after what Theroux described as “a heroic struggle.”
Today, Aniston is a proud dog mom to Lord Chesterfield and Clyde. Clyde even inspired her children’s cookbook, Cook with Clydeo, which features simple recipes for families and benefits The Clydeo Fund, supporting animal rescue causes worldwide.
