Warner Bros. and Legendary have officially unveiled the title of the upcoming sequel to the box office hit A Minecraft Movie, confirming that the next instalment will be called A Minecraft Movie Squared.
The announcement comes as production continues on the follow-up to the 2025 film adaptation of the globally popular video game franchise. The sequel is scheduled for a theatrical release on 23 July 2027.
The original film proved to be a major commercial success for the studios, starring Jack Black as expert crafter Steve and Jason Momoa as part of a group of misfits transported into a block-based world.
The family adventure opened with a record-breaking $163 million at the domestic box office. It later earned $960 million worldwide.
Director Jared Hess is returning to helm the sequel and has once again co-written the screenplay alongside Chris Galletta. The new film will also feature Academy Award nominee Kirsten Dunst, who joins the expanding cast.
Warner Bros. and Legendary revealed the sequel's title treatment as part of a new fan competition linked to the Minecraft community. The contest invites creators to design content that could potentially appear in the film or within its end credits.
The winning entrant will also receive the opportunity to attend a private screening of A Minecraft Movie Squared with friends. Additional details about the competition have been made available through Minecraft’s official channels.
The sequel's production team includes Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, Torfi Frans Ólafsson, Jason Momoa and the late Jill Messick.
Executive producers include Jay Ashenfelter, Jen Conroy, Brian Mendoza, Jon Berg and Jonathan Spaihts.
