Phoebe Bridgers appears to be opening up about her past relationship with Paul Mescal and his romance with Gracie Abrams through songs on her new album Lost Weekend.

Bridgers and Mescal began dating in 2020 and made their relationship public in 2021 before reportedly splitting in late 2022. Mescal began dating Abrams in 2024, and the pair have since been seen together publicly.

On the album's title track, Bridgers appears to reference the couple's previously reported engagement, singing, "I'm supposed to be married but I called it off." The lyric has led fans to connect the song to her relationship with Mescal and speculation that the pair had once planned to marry.

Another track, "The Governor's Waltz", has attracted particular attention because of lyrics that appear to reference Abrams. Bridgers sings about another woman being able to "pretend to be me" after "she took my place in my bed, on that stage", leading listeners to interpret the lines as a reference to Mescal's current girlfriend.

The lyrics have prompted considerable discussion among fans, with some interpreting them as a pointed reference to Abrams and others viewing them as Bridgers processing the end of a significant relationship rather than directly attacking her ex's new partner.

Bridgers and Mescal had largely kept the details of their relationship and breakup private. Mescal previously spoke about the pressures of having his personal life scrutinised, while Bridgers has often explored relationships and heartbreak through her songwriting.

Neither Bridgers, Mescal nor Abrams has publicly confirmed that the songs are specifically about the relationships being discussed by fans. The apparent references have instead left listeners examining the lyrics of Lost Weekend for clues about what happened between Bridgers and Mescal and how she feels about his relationship with Abrams.

Lost Weekend, Bridgers' first solo album in six years, was released on August 14 and contains 16 tracks.
