Karachi celebrates 79th Independence Day with patriotic zeal and call for unity

From the solemnity of the Quaid's mausoleum to the colourful celebrations on the city's streets, Karachi marked Pakistan's 79th Independence Day on Friday with patriotic fervour, tributes to the country's founders and repeated calls for unity, hard work and national progress.

The day began with a traditional 21-gun salute in Karachi and other provincial capitals, following the recitation of the Holy Quran. Mosques across the country offered special prayers after Fajr for Pakistan's security, stability, prosperity and peace, while the city echoed with chants of Allah-o-Akbar and Pakistan Zindabad.

The centrepiece of the celebrations was the solemn ceremony at the mausoleum of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, where provincial leaders, military officials, political figures, government representatives and a large number of citizens gathered to pay tribute to the founder of Pakistan.

A ceremonial change of guard was held at the mausoleum, with two contingents comprising cadets of the Pakistan Naval Academy and sailors of the Pakistan Navy assuming guard duties. Pakistan Naval Academy Commandant Rear Admiral Muhammad Umair laid a floral wreath at the Quaid's grave and offered Fateha. Sindh Governor Syed Muhammad Nihal Hashmi and Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah also visited the mausoleum along with members of the provincial cabinet, the chief secretary, Sindh inspector general of police and Karachi commissioner. They jointly hoisted the national flag, laid flowers at the grave and prayed for the country's security and stability. They also recorded their impressions in the visitors' book.

Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said Pakistan had emerged through the power of the vote and highlighted Sindh's historic role in the creation of the country.

He recalled that the Sindh Assembly had passed a resolution in support of Pakistan and said the province could take pride in having played a frontline role in the struggle for independence.

Murad paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for Pakistan and also praised political and military leadership for defending the country. He said Pakistan wanted a peaceful world and would continue to raise its voice for oppressed people in places including occupied Kashmir and Palestine.
