As Only Murders in the Building gears up for its fifth season, fans are eager for the mystery but also questioning the show’s future. The beloved Hulu comedy returns on September 9 with three episodes at launch, followed by weekly instalments every Tuesday through the ten-episode run. This season begins with the shocking death of Lester, the Arconia’s loyal doorman, who was discovered lifeless in the Season 4 finale. Now Charles, Mabel and Oliver must unravel what happened, all while juggling personal upheavals that could shape their lives beyond the case.
Steve Martin, Selena Gomez and Martin Short once again anchor the story. Charles experiments with online dating, Mabel clashes with a childhood friend, and Oliver navigates life as a newlywed with Loretta, played by Meryl Streep. The mix of humour and heartfelt drama promises fans another binge-worthy ride. Off-screen, gossip has swirled about Short and Streep’s friendship, though both insist they are close friends rather than romantic partners. Martin could not resist teasing, joking that Oliver’s whirlwind relationship with Loretta mirrored Short’s rumoured connection.
The question hanging over the season, however, is whether the show could end here. Martin, who cocreated the series, admitted that nothing is guaranteed. He explained that while the team believes another season will follow, cancellation is always possible. His words underscored the unpredictable nature of television: “You can just be cancelled. Even if it was cancelled tomorrow, we would have to say we had a great, great run.”
Gomez, who has grown up with her character Mabel since the 2021 premiere, expressed a different hope. She wants the show to continue for years to come, allowing her to evolve with the role. Short echoed her optimism, noting that the cast has become a close-knit group over the past five years. Their playful banter during interviews reflects how much comfort and camaraderie has developed behind the scenes.
For now, the only certainty is that Season 5 will deliver another gripping mystery at the Arconia, packed with twists, guest stars and plenty of laughs. Whether the story ends or continues, Only Murders in the Building has already cemented itself as one of the most successful streaming comedies of the decade.
