DC Studios co-head James Gunn has addressed speculation surrounding Robert Pattinson’s potential inclusion in the main DC Universe and provided an update on the status of The Batman Part II.
Speaking with Rolling Stone, Gunn clarified ongoing rumours but left the door slightly ajar, stating, “I would never say zero, because you just never know. But it’s not likely. It’s not likely at all.” This suggests that there are no current plans for Pattinson’s Batman to join the mainline DCU alongside David Corenswet’s Superman, who will debut in Superman this July.
Fan hopes for a unified DCU Trinity featuring Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman remain in flux, especially with the DCU’s Batman-centric film, The Brave and the Bold, still without a lead actor. Meanwhile, Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II, a standalone sequel in a separate continuity, continues to face development delays.
Originally expected to deliver a script in early 2024, Reeves and co-writer Mattson Tomlin have yet to finalise the screenplay. This has pushed the film’s release to October 1, 2027. Amid online speculation that the sequel might be cancelled, Gunn addressed the concerns directly. “Batman Part II is not canceled. We don’t have a script. Matt’s slow. Let him take his time,” Gunn stated, dismissing cancellation rumours and encouraging patience from fans.
Gunn also disputed recent reports claiming the script was expected by Memorial Day, noting on Threads that such expectations were unfounded. As development continues, it now appears unlikely that production will begin in 2025.
Despite growing frustrations over the delay, DC Studios appears committed to allowing Reeves the time he needs to develop the sequel. For now, The Batman Part II remains on track for a 2027 release, albeit with an uncertain production timeline.
