An association of retired military officers has backed the Rangers-led operation in Karachi and criticised recent ‘attempts to politicise’ the paramilitary force.
A statement issued on Sunday by the Pakistan Ex-Servicemen Association (Pesa) came against the backdrop of growing differences between the Sindh government and the Rangers over the handling of the ongoing operation in the port city.
Pesa comprises former military officers, who are believed to be still closely connected with their institution. The Pesa executive council presided over by Lt Gen (retd) Ali Kuli Khan met in Islamabad to discuss various issues.
“Pesa fully supports the activities and the report of Sindh Rangers director-general and demands continuous operation to clean up the financial capital of the country from violence, extortion, kidnapping for ransom and targeted killings,” read the statement issued after the meeting.
The government must ensure that all cases unearthed by the Rangers are taken to their logical conclusion and no political convenience is allowed to delay justice, irrespective of the status of the guilty, it said. The investigations must not be kept under wraps due to political pressure or constitutional constraints, it added.
