April rain record broken after 41 years

Old Airport weather station logs 38.6mm rainfall, surpassing 1985 record

KARACHI:

April rainfall in Karachi has reached a historic high, with the city's oldest meteorological station recording levels unseen in more than four decades following a spell of moderate to heavy showers.

The historic weather observatory at the old airport recorded 38.6mm of rainfall, breaking a 41-year-old April record, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department.

Officials said the previous high for the month - 37mm - was recorded on April 2, 1985, at the same station, located in the Pehlwan Goth area and regarded as the city's primary source of long-term weather data.

Spokesperson and Deputy Director of the Met Office Anjum Nazir Zaigham said the recent rain-bearing system brought widespread showers across Karachi, ranging from moderate to heavy downpours in different areas.

He noted that 36.6mm of rain fell within a 24-hour period at the old airport observatory, contributing to the record-breaking total for April.

The station holds historical significance as it compiles Karachi's core meteorological data, including temperature, wind speed and direction, rainfall, fog, and hail.

Other official weather stations in the city include those at PAF Faisal on Sharae Faisal and PAF Masroor in Mauripur, which also monitor atmospheric conditions across different zones of Karachi.
