No respite in sight: Violence claims eight lives in the city

Two people were killed when rival group members came face to face at a wedding ceremony.

KARACHI: Eight people were killed in separate acts of violence in the city on Sunday.

Two people were shot dead and three others were injured in a firing incident near Murtaza Chowrangi, Landhi, with the jurisdiction of the Sharafi Goth police station late Saturday night. The slain men were identified as Ashiq and Yousuf while Syed Salim, Ghulam Mustafa and his brother, Ghulam Rasool, were hurt. The deceased and injured were taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. SHO Irfan Meo said the incident occurred when members of two rival groups came face to face at a wedding ceremony. One of the groups opened fire at the other and escaped.

In another incident, a labourer, identified as 30-year-old Dalil, was found dead within the jurisdiction of Saudabad police station. Police officials, while quoting the victim’s family, said that Dalil had gone missing after he left home on Saturday evening. They added that he was shot once in the head.

Another man was found dead from Ghanchi Para within the limits of Napier police station.

In another act of violence, a transporter, 40-year-old Amjad Sultan, was shot dead outside his home in Musharraf Colony, within the jurisdiction of the Mauripur police station. Following the incident, police officials detained a police constable, Shabbir and his son, Khawer, as the prime suspects for the murder. The arrested law enforcer had been posted at Baloch Colony police station and allegedly killed the victim over a monetary dispute.

A Muttahida Qaumi Movement worker was shot dead in New Karachi, within the jurisdiction of Bilal Colony police station. Police officials said the victim, identified as Azhar, son of Abdul Ghani, was associated with MQM’s Unit-140-B. Two police officials, ASI Talib Maher and constable, Ali Akbar, were wounded in an armed attack on Northern Bypass. SHO Naeem Khan said the injured policemen were returning to the police check post after patrolling the area when unidentified armed motorcyclists opened fire at them.
