Jameela Street Pumping Station in Old City area, built in 1887, has been upgraded by enhancing its capacity from nine million gallons to 17 million.
Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab, accompanied by Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad and MD Water Corporation Asadullah Khan, on Saturday inaugurated the pumping station after the completion of its construction and repair works.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony, the mayor said that the upgradation will help address sewage issues in Old City localities including Saddar, Lyari, Garden, and other areas.
He said this is the area from where mayor, deputy mayor, federal and provincial ministers were elected in the past, but no one ever worked for the progress of this neighbourhood. The residents put their demands in front of us, following which we successfully completed this work and prepared this plan to improve the machinery here.
He said five imported new pumps have been installed in facility and efforts are being made to eliminate power load shedding. Until the electricity problem is resolved, standby generators have been installed. After the construction and repairing of Jameela Street Pumping Station, drainage of sewage water will be possible. He said that Lyari is the crown of our head and our life. We are dedicated to provide relief to the residents of Lyari by any means.
Mayor went on to say that Cheel Chowk is at a distance of 100 metres from Jameela Street Pumping Station. There was a time when people could not go there, but today, with the efforts of present government, only people can go there, but development work is also ongoing in the area. He requested the media to show these efforts to people so that they can understand that the development activities are going on in the metropolis.
Mayor said that Jameela Street Pumping Station was built in 1887 which also depicts the history of Karachi.
The mayor said that the Sindh government had given land to the railway to build tracks, but the railways built housing societies, petrol pumps and buildings. The construction of a petrol pump is in progress on Sharea Faisal adjacent to Falaknaz Plaza.
He said Port Qasim, Karachi Port Trust, EPZA use the infrastructure of Karachi but they are not ready to spend money on it. Improving the roads and infrastructure of Karachi is considered the responsibility of KMC. He said that we are serving in all areas without discrimination and will continue to do so.
Member of Provincial Assembly Muhammad Yousuf Baloch, PPP leader Khalil Hoat, Deputy Parliamentary Leader Dil Muhammad, UC 5 Chairman Shahid Hussain Baloch, UC 4's Siddique Baloch, UC 6's Rashid Haroon, UC 10's Hanif Chhatani, Muhammad Raisi, and other local leaders were also present on the occasion.
