SUKKUR:

The Ghotki district and sessions court granted interim bail, till July 5, to six policemen on Saturday. They included three SHOs, an ASI and two constables.

They had been booked for allegedly killing a man during a raid in Rehmat Jagirani village on Friday night. The police had raided the village and searched the houses, causing the residents to panic. The villagers began running about in confusion and the police opened fire at them, causing the death of a village elder, Hazaro Jagirani.

The police, however, left immediately after the raid. But later, hundreds of villagers gathered at the Ghotki Bypass and protested by burning tyres and blocking the highway for more than two hours.

The Ghotki SSP ordered registering FIRs against the policemen involved in the raid. Cases were registered against Ismail Bozdar, the SHO of Katchi Bhindi-II, Urs Noonari, Raunti SHO Abdullah Awan, ASI Allah Dino Waseer, police constables Rafiq Bharo and Mohammad Ali Sabzoi and five unidentified men, but no arrests were made. The policemen were booked for murder but later the FIR was tampered with and the offence changed from Section 302 to 319, which deals with accidental death.

A large number of Jagirani clan members, led by the deceased’s wife, Anwar Khatoon, gathered outside the Ghotki Press Club and staged a demonstration against the police. However, neither Ghotki SSP Mazhar Nawaz Shaikh nor Ubauro DSP Niaz Chandio could be contacted for any comment.
