Dr Aftab Qureshi case: Doctor detained during encounter implicated in FIR

A suspect detained in connection with the murder of neurosurgeon, Dr Aftab Ahmed Qureshi, during the police encounter has been implicated in the FIR.


Dr Ashok Malhi, who was taken into custody along with his mother from the Bungalow where Dr Qureshi was kept, has been sent on a judicial remand for seven days.

Dr Malhi was staying at the ground floor of the bungalow with his mother while Dr Qureshi was held on the first floor. Three persons, including the doctor, a police ASI and the suspected kidnapper, were slain in the botched raid conducted by Citizen Police Liaison Committee, Karachi, and the Anti-Violent Crime Cell in Abdullah Valley area of Hyderabad on May 30.

The investigation of the case was handed over to the Crime Branch’s DSP Abullah Unar. According to police sources, at least four other persons have been detained for their involvement in the kidnapping but only Malhi has been nominated so far. Meanwhile, the Sindh High Court is also hearing a suo motu case about the conduct of the raid. Hyderabad police was not informed prior to the swoop.
