City seeks to double Hub Dam share

Karachi's long-standing water shortage may see some relief as a key development has emerged regarding an increase in the city's water allocation from Hub Dam.

The Sindh Secretary for Local Government has forwarded a summary to the Chief Minister, seeking approval to take the matter up with the federal government. The move follows a formal request by the CEO of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC), who highlighted the city's rapidly growing population and acute water scarcity.

According to officials, the proposal recommends doubling Karachi's current share from 100 million gallons per day (MGD) to 200 MGD. The allocation from Hub Dam has remained unchanged since 1981, despite a massive surge in population and water demand, exacerbating the city's supply crisis.

A spokesperson noted that the Sindh government has already developed the necessary infrastructure to handle increased supply. With the completion of the New Hub Canal, the system now has the capacity to deliver up to 200 MGD to Karachi.
