Netflix bets on nostalgia again
'13 Going On 30' reboot signals streaming's appetite for familiar hits

A wave of nostalgia-driven storytelling continues to sweep through Hollywood, as studios and streaming giants double down on familiar titles with contemporary appeal, reviving beloved classics for a new generation while banking on enduring audience attachment.
Among the latest projects gaining momentum is a reboot of '13 Going On 30', now in development at Netflix, with Emily Bader and Logan Lerman set to lead the cast. The project also brings back Jennifer Garnerthe face of the original filmas an executive producer, signalling a bridge between past and present iterations of the story.
Directed by Brett Haley, the reboot reunites him with Bader following their recent collaboration on 'People We Meet on Vacation', a romantic comedy that performed strongly on Netflix's global charts. Their creative partnership appears central to the reimagining, with insiders suggesting the duo actively sought a project that could match their previous success.
While plot details remain tightly guarded, the original '13 Going On 30', released in 2004 by Columbia Pictures, centred on a teenage girl who magically wakes up in her 30-year-old body, navigating adulthood while rediscovering her identity. The film, starring Garner alongside Mark Ruffalo, went on to gross nearly $96 million worldwide and has since cemented its place as a cultural touchstone.
Haley has acknowledged the weight of that legacy, describing the original as "one of those rare, perfect films" and emphasising the responsibility of revisiting a story so closely tied to audience memory. Garner's involvement behind the scenes adds a layer of continuity, particularly as she remains closely associated with the film's emotional core.
Bader, whose profile has risen steadily following recent streaming successes, is also attached to another major Netflix project, portraying football legend Mia Hamm in the upcoming drama 'The 99'ers'. Lerman, meanwhile, continues to build on a varied career spanning independent films and mainstream television, most recently appearing in 'Only Murders in the Building'.
The reboot forms part of a broader industry pattern, where established intellectual property is increasingly being revisited across formats. Garner herself has already been involved in a stage adaptation of '13 Going On 30', which premiered in Manchester, further underlining the story's enduring appeal across mediums.
This trend extends beyond romantic comedies. A big-screen revival of the long-running television series 'Murder, She Wrote' is also in development, with Jamie Lee Curtis stepping into the iconic role of Jessica Fletcher, originally played by Angela Lansbury. The film, backed by Universal Pictures, is slated for a December 2027 release, positioning it as a major holiday title.
As studios continue to mine established titles for fresh interpretations, the challenge lies in balancing familiarity with reinvention. For audiences, the appeal is clear: stories that once defined an era are being retold with new faces and updated sensibilities. For creators, however, the task is more delicatehonouring what made the originals resonate while ensuring they remain relevant in a rapidly shifting entertainment landscape.
In the case of '13 Going On 30', much will depend on whether its new iteration can capture the emotional sincerity and charm that defined the original, or whether it risks becoming another entry in an increasingly crowded field of reboots.
