Romance bestseller 'Beach Read' sets lead pairing
Patrick Schwarzenegger and Phoebe Dynevor headline film adaptation

Patrick Schwarzenegger has joined Phoebe Dynevor in the film adaptation of Emily Henry's bestselling 2020 novel 'Beach Read', stepping into the role of Gus Everett in a project that continues Hollywood's growing interest in contemporary romantic fiction and its loyal global readership.
The casting places Schwarzenegger opposite Dynevor, who will play January Andrews in the 20th Century Studios production. The film is based on Henry's widely popular novel, which blends romance and creative struggle through the story of two writers navigating personal and professional uncertainty during a summer spent as neighbours on a Michigan beach.
'Beach Read' follows January Andrews, a romance novelist who has lost faith in love, and Augustus Everett, a literary writer battling severe writer's block. Living in adjoining beach houses, the pair strike a creative pact: Augustus will attempt to write something optimistic, while January commits to producing a serious literary work. Their arrangement soon expands beyond writing exercises, as both characters confront emotional histories while researching and experiencing each other's worlds.
As part of their unusual arrangement, January introduces Gus to romantic settings intended to spark inspiration, while he takes her into darker thematic territory, including interviews with surviving members of a cult. What begins as a professional experiment gradually evolves into a deeper emotional connection, blurring the line between storytelling and lived experience.
The film is directed by Yulin Kuang, who also co-wrote the adaptation of Henry's 'People We Meet on Vacation' for Netflix. Kuang has previously spoken about the distinct tone of Henry's work, noting that while the novels share a sense of emotional warmth, each carries its own narrative identity and emotional rhythm.
Describing the casting process, Kuang said the production team evaluated numerous actors over a six-month period, stressing that the goal was not simply to cast individual roles, but to find an on-screen pairing with convincing chemistry.
She noted that initial meetings with Schwarzenegger left a strong impression, describing him as a "slow burn" presence whose approach to romance and emotional expression stood out during auditions.
According to Kuang, the final decision became clearer after screen tests with Dynevor, where both actors demonstrated a natural on-screen dynamic. The director said the pairing created a noticeable energy during chemistry reads, reinforcing the choice to cast them opposite each other.
Schwarzenegger expressed enthusiasm about joining what fans have dubbed the "Emily Henry cinematic universe," stating his commitment to honouring the source material and its readership. He also acknowledged Dynevor and Kuang, praising the collaborative process during auditions and early development discussions.
Dynevor will lead the adaptation alongside Schwarzenegger as production moves forward under producer Neal H Moritz through Original Film, with Karina Rahardja serving as executive producer. The studio adaptation adds to a growing list of Emily Henry novels being developed for screen, reflecting the author's expanding influence in contemporary romantic storytelling.
With multiple Henry titles already in various stages of adaptation, 'Beach Read' further cements Hollywood's sustained interest in literary romance as a source of screen narratives, combining character-driven storytelling with audience-driven anticipation.
