Tanzyn Crawford, who portrays the traveling performer Tanselle in HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, has spoken out about the online backlash she received from some fans unhappy with her casting, saying the experience was “intimidating” but ultimately reaffirmed her commitment to her work.

In an interview with Wonderland magazine, the Australian actress acknowledged that stepping into a beloved fantasy franchise came with pressure, particularly from viewers who took issue with her presence in the adaptation of the Game of Thrones universe.

“It was intimidating to step into something that people are so connected to, love so much and have a lot of opinions about,” she said, describing the early response to her casting.

Crawford added that she “definitely did get some negativity around race,” but pushed back against that backlash with a grounded perspective on her career. “At the end of the day, I’m employed, and I’m following my dreams,” she explained, emphasising that her focus remains on the work rather than the opinions of critics.

Her confidence was further strengthened by the support of Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin, who personally assured her that she was exactly what he envisioned for the role of Tanselle. “[Martin told me] ‘You’re exactly what I pictured [for Tanselle],’” Crawford said, highlighting how that validation helped her embrace the part with confidence.

While A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been widely praised and has grown its viewership throughout its first season, Crawford’s comments underline the sometimes divisive nature of fandom reactions to casting choices in major franchises, especially when it comes to conversations about race and representation in fantasy settings.

Despite the criticism, Crawford’s performance and her next project, a role in Netflix’s live‑action adaptation of Assassin’s Creed, show that her career continues to move forward, even as she navigates the mixed responses to her work in Westeros.
