Viola Davis had the crowd on its feet when she announced Michael B. Jordan as the winner of Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role at the 32nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on March 1 in Los Angeles.

Taking the stage at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall, Viola Davis audibly gasped and shouted in celebration as she opened the envelope and revealed Michael B. Jordan as the night’s big winner. The emotional moment drew laughter and cheers from the audience before Jordan made his way to the stage amid one of the ceremony’s longest standing ovations.

Jordan earned the honor for his dual performance in Sinners, where he portrays twin brothers Smoke and Stack in a 1930s-set vampire thriller. The film, directed by longtime collaborator Ryan Coogler, follows the brothers as they return to their Mississippi hometown to open a nightclub, only to face a deadly supernatural threat.

The actor triumphed over a competitive field that included Timothée Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ethan Hawke and Jesse Plemons, marking his first individual win at the SAG Awards. Davis’ enthusiastic reaction reflected her well-documented admiration for the film, as she previously moderated a cast discussion for the project late last year.

“Sinners” continued its strong awards season run by also claiming Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. The ensemble includes Hailee Steinfeld, Delroy Lindo, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson and Omar Benson Miller.

The film’s latest wins add to an already historic season, with “Sinners” emerging as one of the most decorated projects of the year ahead of the upcoming Academy Awards.
