Protesters rally at Scream 7 premiere over Melissa Barrera’s firing

Protesters gathered outside the premiere of Scream 7 at the Paramount Studios lot in Los Angeles on Wednesday night, calling for a boycott of the horror sequel following the firing of former franchise star Melissa Barrera.

Demonstrators were seen holding Palestinian flags and chanting slogans including “Stand for free speech” and “Cancel Paramount+,” voicing support for Barrera and Palestine.

The controversy dates back to Barrera’s dismissal from the franchise after she shared social media posts criticizing Israel in the wake of the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack and the country’s military response.

Production company Spyglass Media Group said at the time that it has “zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate,” citing her posts as the reason for her removal.

Speaking on the red carpet, director Kevin Williamson acknowledged the protest, saying people have a right to make their voices heard amid global conflicts.

While expressing sympathy, he added that he wasn’t sure boycotting Paramount+ was the solution, encouraging individuals to follow their own convictions.

The fallout from Barrera’s exit led to major changes behind the scenes. Co-star Jenna Ortega left the project citing scheduling conflicts, and original director Christopher Landon also departed. Franchise veteran Neve Campbell ultimately returned as Sidney Prescott, with Williamson stepping in to direct.

Scream 7 follows Sidney as she attempts to build a quiet life, only for Ghostface to resurface once again.
