Resident Evil Requiem has debuted as the highest-rated game of 2026 so far, according to review aggregator Metacritic.

With review scores published ahead of its February 27 launch, the latest entry in Capcom’s long-running horror franchise currently holds a Metascore of 88. That places it at the top of Metacritic’s Best Games of 2026 list at the time of writing.

Critics have highlighted the game’s blend of horror and action, as well as its scope, graphical presentation and character work.

Several reviews also reference its level of gore and nods to long-time fans of the series. However, some reviewers have pointed to pacing concerns and tonal shifts linked to character swapping between the two lead protagonists.

In a review published by Men’s Journal, the game was described as “Capcom’s greatest hits” for the franchise, while noting criticism of the narrative and boss encounters. The review also stated that newcomer Grace Ashcroft is “the best new character since the original four” and praised the portrayal of Leon S. Kennedy.

Resident Evil Requiem’s score of 88 makes it the highest-rated mainline Resident Evil title since Resident Evil 4 in 2005.

It has scored above Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village, although it remains below the remake versions of Resident Evil 2 from 2019 and Resident Evil 4 from 2023, which are among the best-reviewed entries in the series.

The second-highest rated game of 2026 on Metacritic so far is Mewgenics, released earlier this month. A Nintendo Switch 2 version of Resident Evil 7 also features in the current top rankings despite its original release in 2017.

Resident Evil Requiem launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC on February 27.
