Christy Carlson Romano has said she is seeking further medical testing after receiving a positive cancer screening result and is currently disputing insurance coverage for additional scans.

The former Disney Channel actor shared in a video on Instagram that she and her husband, Brendan Rooney, recently underwent cancer screenings due to her family history. Romano said both of her parents had cancer and that her father died from the disease.

“My next steps are to get a PET scan,” she said. “I've been fighting with companies to get that covered.”

A positron emission tomography, or PET, scan is an imaging test used to detect diseased cells by tracking a radiotracer in the body. Romano said she initially struggled to process the news while working.

“Cancer is everywhere, which is why I got this test,” she said. “I kind of was in disbelief about it, because I was filming, and I was so happy to be back on set, and I didn't want to really think about it much.”

She added: “It's time to have a strong sense of faith and know that it's in God's hands, most of it. I'm sure people think I'm overreacting, but I'm not, because cancer is pretty serious, and I have two little girls.”

Her comments prompted discussion online about health insurance coverage in the United States. One social media user wrote: “No one should have to fight with insurance to have their medical needs met.”

Romano also received messages of support from her husband and fellow entertainers. Rooney wrote, “You got this my beautiful wife. We will figure this out and destroy any problem that comes your way. I love you beyond words.”

The American Cancer Society commented: “Thinking of you, Christy. We're with you and sending our love.”
