Christy Carlson Romano reveals positive cancer screening test result

Christy Carlson Romano shared an emotional health update after receiving a positive result from a recent cancer screening test.

In an Instagram video posted Feb. 17, the former Even Stevens star said she received the results shortly before filming in Florida. “My husband's came back completely negative. Mine did not come back negative,” Romano explained, noting that the screening result does not mean she has been diagnosed with cancer.

The 41-year-old said her next step is to undergo a PET scan, an imaging test used to evaluate cellular and metabolic activity in the body and help detect conditions such as cancer and heart disease. Fighting back tears, Romano acknowledged feeling “nervous and a bit scared,” adding that the seriousness of cancer weighs heavily on her as a mother of two young daughters, Isabella, 9, and Sofia, 7, whom she shares with husband Brendan Rooney.

Romano said her decision to take the screening test was influenced in part by a family history of cancer and by the recent death of her friend, actor James Van Der Beek. Van Der Beek died Feb. 11 at age 48 after a yearslong battle with colorectal cancer. Romano described him as a respected member of their Texas community and someone whose family was deeply involved in charitable work.

Despite her concerns, the Kim Possible alum said she is trying to remain hopeful. She highlighted her strong support system and ongoing projects, including an upcoming memoir, as sources of encouragement during this uncertain time.

“When you're somebody like me, you gotta take life a day at a time,” Romano said, adding that she plans to continue seeking answers and provide updates as she learns more.

Romano has been open about health challenges in the past. In February 2025, she revealed she was accidentally shot in the face while celebrating her husband’s birthday at a clay shooting range, leaving a fragment lodged behind her eye that doctors deemed too risky to remove at the time.

Her latest update prompted an outpouring of support from fans as she awaits further testing.
