James Van Der Beek’s friend slams GoFundMe backlash
Mehcad Brooks defended James Van Der Beek’s $2.6 million GoFundMe after critics questioned why the family needed it

Mehcad Brooks has forcefully defended the $2.6 million GoFundMe created for the family of James Van Der Beek following the actor’s death, hitting back at critics who claimed the fundraiser “doesn’t sit right”.
The campaign, launched by friends, was set up to support Van Der Beek’s wife and children after it was revealed that his cancer battle had left the family financially strained. While many fans donated and shared messages of support, some social media users questioned why a well known television star would require public fundraising at all.
One Threads user suggested that someone with a long acting career should have had life insurance or ongoing residual payments. The criticism gained traction after reports surfaced that Van Der Beek had purchased a ranch outside Austin, Texas, for $4.8 million in January, having previously rented the property after relocating from California in 2020.
Brooks, a close friend of the late actor, responded directly on Threads in an impassioned message. He dismissed what he called misleading headlines and said critics had no understanding of the family’s private circumstances. In his post, Brooks urged detractors to refrain from commenting on matters they could not fully know, adding that public speculation during a period of grief lacked empathy.
A representative for Van Der Beek clarified to People that the down payment for the Texas ranch had been secured with help from friends through a trust, allowing the family to transition from renting to a mortgage arrangement. Supporters of the fundraiser argue that high property values do not necessarily reflect liquid assets, particularly following extended medical treatment.
Friends behind the GoFundMe also issued a statement thanking donors as the campaign surpassed $2 million, describing the outpouring of generosity as a source of comfort during intense mourning. They said the support demonstrated the impact Van Der Beek had on audiences over decades.
Brooks has continued to honour his friend publicly, sharing photos and describing him as a profound presence in his life. He revealed he spent Van Der Beek’s final days by his side and spoke of the actor’s grace during his last moments.
