Hasbro has announced that Transformers: The Movie will return to theaters as part of a 40th anniversary celebration dubbed the “Apology Tour.”

The yearlong event honors the 1986 animated film, particularly the emotional death of Optimus Prime, one of the franchise’s most iconic moments.

“The Transformers: The Movie marked a defining moment for the franchise,” said Alyse D’Antuono, Vice President of Global Brand & Franchise Strategy at Hasbro. “We recognize just how powerful and unforgettable Optimus Prime’s passing remains, and this anniversary celebrates four decades of fan loyalty and passion.”

The Apology Tour includes special fan screenings, new songs, and appearances at conventions throughout the year. A teaser video released on official Transformers social media channels features the classic ’80s animation style and clips of the original film, including the death of Optimus Prime, accompanied by commentary and fan reactions. The tagline for the campaign is “Let the healing begin.”

In addition to screenings, Hasbro is releasing a new lineup of 40th anniversary collectibles. Highlights include The Matrix of Leadership electronic movie replica and new Studio Series figures featuring Shockwave, Skywarp, Wheeljack, Kranix, Sunstreaker, Astrotrain, and Snarl. Products inspired by Optimus Prime, Megatron, Hot Rod, Hound, and Scourge are also part of the anniversary collection. Pre-orders will open February 16 and 17, with further reveals planned throughout the year.

Hasbro described the initiative as a playful yet heartfelt way to bring fans together to celebrate the film’s legacy, grieve, and reminisce. While exact screening dates have not been announced, events are expected to coincide with major conventions such as San Diego Comic-Con. Fans are encouraged to attend with tissues in hand for the emotional trip down memory lane.
