Michelle Yeoh sidesteps U.S. politics while accepting Golden Bear honor
Michelle Yeoh avoids U.S. politics at Berlin, emphasizing cinema’s power while accepting honorary Golden Bear

Michelle Yeoh declined to comment on U.S. politics during a press conference at the Berlin Film Festival, stating it was “best not to talk about something I don’t know about” and redirecting attention toward the importance of cinema.
The Oscar-winning actress said she did not feel positioned to speak on the American political climate and preferred to focus on filmmaking and the shared experience of moviegoing.
Yeoh emphasized her belief in the enduring appeal of theaters despite the evolving entertainment landscape. She noted that cinema offers audiences a rare opportunity to disconnect from distractions, open their hearts, and experience stories collectively. According to the actress, preserving this tradition remains essential as viewing habits continue to shift.
During the conference, Yeoh also expressed interest in expanding her collaborations with European filmmakers and revealed she is eager to work with acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro. She encouraged filmmakers to consider her for future projects, highlighting her desire to remain active in global cinema.
Addressing representation, Yeoh acknowledged that progress for Asian actors in Hollywood “continues to be a struggle.” Reflecting on the early skepticism surrounding films like Crazy Rich Asians and the Oscar-winning Everything Everywhere All at Once, she credited perseverance and industry change for creating new opportunities. She added that her career has been defined by resilience and a determination to challenge expectations.
The festival honored Yeoh with an honorary Golden Bear for lifetime achievement, presented by director Sean Baker. Accepting the award, she delivered an emotional speech about making her parents proud and carrying forward the values instilled by her father.
With decades in the industry, Yeoh continues to advocate for inclusivity while reinforcing cinema’s cultural significance on the global stage.
