Baldur’s Gate TV series announced by HBO without Larian Studios involvement

HBO confirms Baldur’s Gate television series continuing events after Baldur’s Gate 3 with Larian Studios not involved

HBO has confirmed that a Baldur’s Gate television series is in development and will take place after the events of Baldur’s Gate 3.

The project will be led by Craig Mazin, showrunner of The Last of Us, once he completes work on the third season of that series. Despite the connection to the recent game, Larian Studios, the developer behind Baldur’s Gate 3, will not be part of the production.

The news was first reported on February 5, 2026, with HBO outlining plans for an ongoing show inspired by the Dungeons & Dragons universe.

The story is expected to continue from where Baldur’s Gate 3 concluded, featuring a mixture of established characters and new additions. Because the game includes thousands of possible endings, the television adaptation will need to select one outcome as canon.

Mazin has indicated an interest in working with actors from Baldur’s Gate 3, though no roles have been confirmed. A similar approach was taken in The Last of Us, where voice actors from the game appeared in different capacities in the television version. The possibility of cameo appearances or full reprisals remains open.

Speaking about the project, Mazin said, “After putting nearly 1,000 hours into the incredible world of Baldur’s Gate 3, it is a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of The Coast created. I am a devoted fan of D&D and the brilliant way that Swen Vince and his gifted team adapted it.”

Shortly after the announcement, Geoff Keighley reported on social media that Larian Studios confirmed it has no involvement in the series.

Publishing director Michael Douse reacted to the news online, expressing hope that the original writers and creators would receive proper credit and that the characters would be represented at the same level as the game.
