Eric Dane is set to publish a memoir about living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the Associated Press reports, with the book scheduled for release in 2026. The Grey’s Anatomy actor, 53, will publish Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments through the Open Field, the imprint of Maria Shriver at Penguin Random House.

“I wake up every morning, and I’m immediately reminded that this is real — this illness, this challenge, and that’s exactly why I’m writing this book,” Dane said in a statement provided to the AP.

“I want to capture the moments that shaped me — the beautiful days, the hard ones, the ones I never took for granted — so that, if nothing else, people who read it will remember what it means to live with heart.”

He added, “If sharing this helps someone find meaning in their own days, then my story is worth telling.” Shriver commented that Dane wrote the book to make his daughters, whom he shares with estranged wife Rebecca Gayheart, “proud,” and to help readers understand ALS and how to support those living with neurological conditions.

Dane went public with his ALS diagnosis in April, stating he would return to the set of the third season of HBO’s Euphoria, scheduled to air in April 2026.

ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease affecting muscle control and eventually breathing. According to the Mayo Clinic, about half of those diagnosed die within 14 to 18 months, though some live ten years or more.

In a June interview with Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America, Dane described early symptoms including weakness in his right hand, which has now rendered the right side of his body inactive.

He reflected on his fears, stating, “I mean really, at the end of the day, all I want to do is spend time with my family and work a little bit if I can.”

Dane’s memoir aims to share his experience and offer insight into the daily realities of living with ALS.
