Oscar-nominated actress Penelope Milford, best known for her performance in the 1978 film Coming Home, has died at the age of 77. Her brother, Doug Milford, confirmed that she passed away in Saugerties, New York.

Milford rose to prominence in the 1970s and 1980s with a career that spanned film, television, and stage. She earned critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Vi Munson in Coming Home, where she starred alongside Jon Voight and Jane Fonda.

Before her Hollywood breakthrough, Milford had already made a name for herself on Broadway, where she appeared in several successful productions. Her screen career included roles in Norman Mailer’s cult film Maidstone (1970), Ken Russell’s Valentino (1977), and Franco Zeffirelli’s Endless Love (1981).

Milford later transitioned into television, taking on memorable roles in popular productions. She acted with Henry Fonda, Cloris Leachman, and Timothy Hutton in the Emmy-winning TV play The Oldest Living Graduate. In 1984, she earned praise for her performance in The Burning Bed, a landmark TV film addressing domestic violence that starred Farrah Fawcett and received Golden Globe and WGA honors.

After stepping away from Hollywood, Milford dedicated her time to teaching, sharing her expertise at film schools in Chicago and Minneapolis. Her career left a lasting mark on both stage and screen, remembered for her depth, grace, and commitment to her craft.
