John Lodge, the legendary bassist, vocalist, and songwriter of The Moody Blues, has died at the age of 82. His family confirmed his passing in a statement released on Friday, describing the loss as “sudden and unexpected,” according to The Mirror.

“It is with the deepest sadness that we have to announce that John Lodge, our darling husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, and brother, has been suddenly and unexpectedly taken from us,” the statement read. The family did not disclose the cause of death but noted that Lodge passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones and the music of The Everly Brothers and Buddy Holly.

Lodge’s family emphasized his deep devotion to his wife Kirsten and his family, describing him as a “massive-hearted man” whose greatest passions were his loved ones, music, and faith. “We are heartbroken, but will walk forwards into peace surrounded by the love he had for each of us,” the family added. “As John would always say at the end of the show, thank you for keeping the faith.”

Fans across social media expressed sorrow over the loss. One fan wrote, “RIP John. The Moody Blues were a huge part of my childhood and early adulthood years,” while another said, “Our heroes are leaving us way too soon. Rest in peace to a legend of the Birmingham music scene.”

Born in Birmingham, England, Lodge joined The Moody Blues in 1966, replacing founding member Clint Warwick. Alongside fellow frontman Justin Hayward, Lodge helped shape the band’s progressive rock sound with his falsetto vocals and thoughtful songwriting. He penned several of the band's well-known songs, including “Ride My See-Saw,” “Talking Out of Turn,” and “Emily’s Song.”

The Moody Blues, known for blending rock, classical, and psychedelic sounds, rose to fame with the 1967 concept album Days of Future Passed, featuring the iconic track “Nights in White Satin.” Over their decades-long career, the band sold over 70 million albums and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.

Lodge had upcoming tour dates planned for December.
