Tyra Spaulding, a former Miss Universe Jamaica contestant, has died at the age of 26 after publicly sharing her struggles with mental health and suicidal thoughts on social media.
According to The Gleaner, which cited information from the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Corporate Communications Unit, Spaulding was found dead at her apartment on Tuesday, September 23. She reportedly died by suspected suicide and was discovered by her relatives.
Spaulding represented Jamaica in the 2023 Miss Universe competition and had built a following on YouTube, where she regularly spoke about her mental health experiences.
In a video posted on August 31, she disclosed, “I resigned from my 9 to 5 job, but it was a terrible decision because my mental health just plummeted. And guys, I was at the point where I made a plan to kill myself, so anybody on air, considering [leaving your job] just don't don't do it.”
She also revealed she had previously attempted suicide and was undergoing therapy with the support of a former employer.
In another video on September 5, she told viewers, “I'm fighting for my life over here. I feel like I need to go out and do something because my mind is trying to kill me. And if I do nothing, I am going to die … I am fighting for my life … I’m definitely in a battle right now.”
She also said she was experiencing suicidal thoughts “every day” and described feeling “overwhelmed.”
The Miss Universe Jamaica organisation paid tribute on Instagram, writing: “Her light, grace, beauty and kind spirit touched every life she encountered. We at the Miss Universe Jamaica Organisation keep Tyra’s family, friends, and loved ones in our heartfelt prayers as we celebrate the beautiful life she shared with us.”
