Supermodel Gigi Hadid has revealed she auditioned for the role of Rapunzel in Disney’s planned live-action adaptation of Tangled, a project that has since been placed on hold.
In a cover story for Vogue alongside Kendall Jenner, Hadid reflected on the unusual challenge of stepping into acting for the remake of the 2010 animated film. “What do we do in this job anymore that scares us?” she said, recalling her audition experience. Although she ultimately did not land the part, Hadid explained that she was proud of her performance.
The model said she even took singing lessons during fashion month to prepare for the role. “I knew they were going to go with a real singer,” Hadid admitted, adding that she intended to show Jenner her audition scene.
Disney insiders confirmed the project is currently paused, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The live-action film was in development with The Greatest Showman director Michael Gracey attached and Do Revenge writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson penning the script. However, the studio reportedly halted progress following the underwhelming performance of Snow White at the box office, which was compounded by critical backlash and controversy. It remains unclear whether the Tangled remake will resume or undergo a creative reworking.
Actor Corey Mylchreest, known for My Oxford Year, also auditioned for the project, seeking the role of Flynn Rider. Speaking with Seventeen, Mylchreest joked about his performance, claiming he destroyed all evidence of the audition. “They then told me that they wanted someone with singing experience,” he said.
While the future of Tangled remains uncertain, Disney continues to move forward with other live-action projects. A remake of Moana is scheduled to hit theaters on July 10, 2026.
