Actor Barry Keoghan has spoken candidly about his battle with addiction, marking a significant moment in his journey toward recovery.
In a May 1 interview with Hollywood Authentic, the 32-year-old Saltburn and Masters of the Air star acknowledged for the first time, “I do have an addiction, and I am an addict.”
Keoghan traced his struggle back to childhood trauma, including the death of his mother from a heroin overdose and the loss of other family members to drugs. “I’m not in denial anymore,” he said. “When you accept that, you can finally move on and learn to work with it.”
Despite the birth of his son, Brando, Keoghan admitted that his curiosity about drugs remained strong. “There’s an enormous amount of pressure in Hollywood, and a lifestyle that’s both good and bad for you,” he said, referencing scars on his arms as visible reminders of his drug use.
The Banshees of Inisherin actor credited his longtime driver, Niall, for urging him into treatment by booking him a flight to a rehab center in England. He says he is now more “at peace,” “present,” and “responsible” for his actions.
Keoghan also issued a personal apology: “Mainly to myself more than anyone for all the pain I’ve caused.”
Known for his emotionally intense roles, Keoghan’s public admission adds another layer to his complex and compelling public persona as he continues to focus on healing and personal growth.
