The South Zone police chief DIG Syed Asad Raza on Monday suspended nine police officials, including Eidgah police station SHO and six policewomen, for torturing women and journalists during a civil society protest outside the Karachi Press Club on Sunday.
Images of police dragging women on roads has created a storm on the social media and resulted in a strong backlash against the government in rural Sindh.
An inquiry has been ordered in this case while SHO Eidgah Inspector Zaheer Ahmed Khan has been directed to report to the SSP Special Branch office on daily basis.
Police personnel involved in the incident of mistreatment and violence against women and journalists including, Naila Rehman, Bibi Maryam, Ayesha Rehman, Misbah Rashid, Bibi Amina, Hina Gul, Muhammad Afnan and Syed Amin have been suspended and an inquiry has been ordered against them. A notification has also been issued in this regard. The suspended police personnel have been sent to Garden Headquarters. Daily roll call and parade have also been directed for the suspended police personnel.
City Zone SSP has been directed to take departmental action against the suspended officials and submit a report within 14 days.
