The New York Jets and the NFL are facing a lawsuit from Jim Pons, the man who created one of the team's iconic logos, demanding compensation for its use.
According to TMZ Sports, Pons, who served as a film and video director for the Jets in the 1970s, claims he designed the emblem featuring a jet plane above the letters "E-T-S" in 1978 when the team sought a redesign. The Jets adopted the logo and used it on their uniforms until 1997.
In 2022, the franchise announced it was reintroducing Pons' design part-time and, in early 2024, confirmed it would be used full-time going forward. Initially, Pons, a former rock 'n roll musician, was thrilled about the renewed interest in his design and even participated in a feature with the team, discussing the creation of the logo.
However, Pons' enthusiasm has turned to dissatisfaction, as he now believes he owns the design, which he asserts was created outside the scope of his employment. He contends that the team and the league have profited significantly from his work and is seeking compensation.
The 81-year-old is suing for unspecified damages and is asking a judge to cancel the Jets' trademark of the logo. Additionally, he wants a ruling that prevents the Jets from using the logo on their uniforms and merchandise without his consent and proper compensation.
