Salaries of 29 ‘bad cops’ stopped

Various officers and personnel of Sindh police were found directly involved in smuggling

KARACHI, PAKISTAN:

A question often asked about 'how smuggled items land in Karachi's markets' stands answered as more than 30 policemen including officers have been found either involved directly in the smuggling or facilitating the smugglers.

Sindh IG Rifat Mukhtar Raja has ordered forfeiture of the salaries of 29 cops who have gone on leave to avoid investigations.

Additional IG Establishment has written a letter in which it has been stated that 29 police officers and personnel including inspectors, assistant sub-inspectors, head constables and constables across Sindh are involved in smuggling, therefore, their salaries must be stopped.

AIG's letter follows and earlier report prepared during the former Sindh IG Ghulam Nabi Memon's tenure which had identified the policemen facilitating the smuggling of non-custom paid vehicles, Chinese silk and exotic cloth, Indian gutka and tobacco chews, Iranian diesel and petrol.

Various officers and personnel of Sindh police deployed in Kashmore, Sukkur, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Karachi, Hyderabad and other districts were found directly involved in smuggling or facilitating the smugglers.

More than 30 such police personnel were ordered to report to the Police Headquarters in Garden, Karachi. However, these policemen ignored the orders of IG and instead proceeded on leave without permission.
