KARACHI:

A large number of fishermen, environmentalists and human rights activists participated in a rally held by Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF) on Friday. The rally participants marched from Governor House to Karachi Press Club, expressing solidarity with the March to End Fossil Fuel demonstration to be held in New York on September 17.

The Environmental Justice March held across the world will demand US President Biden to oppose the new projects based on fossil fuels and announce an environmental emergency as a decisive step towards environmental preservation.

PFF General Secretary Saeed Baloch emphasised that rapid and balanced end to use of fossil fuels depends on the leaders of developed countries, who have a significant and historical role towards the environmental crisis faced by the world.

Need to combat ozone layer damage stressed

Numerous electronic items, especially old air conditioners and refrigerators, alongside high carbon-emitting modes of transportation and industrial practices, are significantly contributing to damaging the ozone layer, said Karachi University Institute of Environmental Studies, Professor Dr Farrukh Nawaz,

The University of Karachi (KU) organised a seminar on the occasion of International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, themed 'Plant more trees, reduce air conditioners,' at the KU Garden on Friday. Speaking to the audience, Dr Nawaz highlighted that substantial global efforts have been taken to reduce harmful substances, with the aim of facilitating the healing process of the ozone layer.

"If these measures proceed as planned, there is hope that the ozone layer will eventually return to its original state, as witnessed in the 1970s", said Nawaz.

The event, arranged by the KU Landscape and Gardening Council, aimed to raise awareness about the significance and benefits of the ozone layer.
