KARACHI:

Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) leader Syed Mustafa Kamal has called for a “new system” because he believes that current one has failed as the judiciary has become a target of ridicule while other national institutions are also losing their powers.

Talking to the media after a court hearing on Saturday, Kamal said that he has been hearing since his childhood that “Pakistan is going through a critical period”. However, he added that this “critical period” could turn out to be the last because nothing seemed to be in right place.

Kamal said that the people of Pakistan deserved to be told the truth. “We are told every day that the country is on the verge of default, but if you visit any high-end restaurant, you would not find a place to sit and eat,” he added.

He also condemned the recent increase in the fuel prices, saying that it did not affect the rich but hit the poor hard. He advised the government to withdraw big cars from government officers and arrange their commute to office via public transport. “If you set this example, then the common man will also trust your words,” he added.

Kamal also called upon the people of Sindh to participate in the upcoming digital census, so that the province could get funds from the federal government as per its actual population.

Earlier, the accountability court resumed hearing of a NAB reference involving illegal allotment of plots in Clifton. Mustafa Kamal and others appeared before the court. Kamal’s lawyer Hasan Sabir Advocate argued that his client needed time to submit his passport. The court adjourned the hearing till March 18 while ordering the accused to submit their passports.
