The District Market Committee (DMC) has decided to set up three new wholesale vegetable, fruit and flower markets at the main entrances of the Rawalpindi district to facilitate residents of far-flung areas.
The markets, to be set up along Sawan River near Rawat, Taxila, and Murree, will help the availability of fruit, vegetable, grain and other commodities to the public at an affordable price.
These markets will have parking lots, big shops and warehouses. Approval has been given to set up a fruit and vegetable market at the entrance of the district at Murree and DMC and district administration officials will visit Murree on August 6 to finalise a location.
The establishment of a similar market on the third major route in Taxila has also been approved. The DMC officials will finalise the location in Taxila after August 14.

DMC Chairman Chaudhry Imtiaz Ahmed told The Express Tribune that with the establishment of new vegetable and fruit markets with near three entry points of Rawalpindi district, the prices of commodities are expected to come down by 10 to 15 per cent.
He said that they have shortlisted three to four locations for the vegetable and fruit markets in Murree and they will give the final approval in August after a survey.
The DMC chairman said that after a wholesale market in Murree, the prices of vegetables and fruit will go down in Galiyat, Hazara, Murree, Kotli Sattian, in certain areas of Azad Kashmir and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. As vendors have to take fruits and vegetables from the Islamabad market and that the long commute adds to the cost of commodities, he said.
He said that the establishment of a fruit and vegetable market in Taxila or Chakri will benefit the citizens of Attock, Abbottabad, Hazara, and Haripur.
