KARACHI:

The Sindh environment, climate change and coastal development department has sought nominations from the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) for inclusion in the committee set up to review the Sindh Environmental Protection Act (SEPA), 2014.

Announcing this at the closing ceremony of a two symposium on integrated solid waste management, jointly organised by the KCCI, Society of Economic Geologists and Mineral Technologists and SEPA, Sindh environment, climate change and coastal development secretary Muhammad Aslam Ghauri said his department had sent a letter to the KCCI for the purpose.

As soon as the nominations are received, the committee will be notified after the completion of necessary formalities, he added.

Ghauri further stated the committee would analyse the challenges faced by the SEPA and traders in connection with the implementation of the act, aspects of the law which are complicated and areas that can be improved."

He said the committee would present solutions that were practical and acceptable to all parties, ensuring that environmental standards and requirements were not ignored in any way in the process.

Ghauri said the committee's solutions would seek a middle ground to ensure environmental protection and also enhance trade. He stressed traders needed to support SEPA in the implementation of the act so that its effective enforcement was ensured.

Earlier, KCCI President Shariq Vohra pointed out the need to regulate the recycling sector, which, he said, would enable the government to not only facilitate recycling, but also increase its revenue by levying taxes on those working in the sector.

"The informal recycling industry needs to be registered so that they work in an integrated manner, which will also encourage others to invest in the industry," he said.
