Habib University awards degrees to 127 students

Meesum Haider Ali, from the department of social development and policy, earns distinction

KARACHI: A total of 127 students were awarded degrees at the second convocation ceremony of Habib University, held at the university’s grounds on Sunday. Habib University Chancellor Rafiq M Habib inaugurated the ceremony.

Out of the total graduates, 54 were from the Dhanani School of Science and Engineering and 73 were from the School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. As many as 30 students of electrical engineering and another 24 students of computer science, from the Dhanani School of Science and Engineering, were awarded bachelors degrees. Similarly, 53 students of social development and policy and 20 students of communication studies and design, from the School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, were awarded bachelors degrees.

Meesum Haider Ali, from the department of social development and policy, was awarded the dean’s medal as well as the presidential medal for acquiring distinction. He was also awarded the Chancellor Uhson award and was offered a PhD scholarship, from the University of California. Addressing the ceremony, Ali thanked his teachers and said that it was an honour to be offered a scholarship for pursuing his studies in the United Stated.

Sindh Governor Imran Ismail also attended the ceremony and praised the Habib Group for its endeavours towards serving the citizens of Pakistan. He said that the Almighty has blessed many people with wealth in Pakistan, though few of them generously serve their country and people, like Habib Group. “I am yet to witness a university of this caliber, which offers 90% scholarships,” he added.

Addressing students, Governor Ismail said, “you are lucky to have achieved this position and are now indebted [to this country]. You have to pay it back by serving its people here, in Pakistan.” He added that people who move abroad, after acquiring education in Pakistan, also owe this country and should return back to serve its people.

He further said that girls are more talented than boys and encouraged female students to continue work after marriage so that their talents don’t go to waste. It is the need of the hour that girls work after marriage and contribute towards the prosperity of this country, he remarked.

Habib University President Wasif Rizvi congratulated the graduating students and thanked all parties who had enabled the varsity to offer education, which meets international standards, in the fields of Arts and Science.

Pakistani nabs Harvard fellowship

He said that he considered the graduating students as founders of the university and these students will receive further assistance to affiliate with university’s partner institutions including Stanford University, University of California and University of Michigan.

Noted scholar, Dr Raza Aslan also addressed the ceremony and congratulated the students. Addressing the graduating students, he said that students’ achievements were a result of their hard work and they had a long way to go. “You have completed this journey and are about to start a new one,” remarked Aslan, adding that the students’ education and experience at Habib University will help them in the future.

The ceremony ended with a live performance by the students who played the university’s anthem.
