KARACHI: More than Rs1 million were looted in what appears to be the first bank robbery of the year in the city on Thursday.

Six to seven robbers barged into a branch of Dubai Islamic Bank in Clifton area, within the remits of Gizri police station on gunpoint and held the staff and security hostage, the police said, referring to the statements recorded. They took around Rs1.2 million in cash from the bank and fled, police said, while quoting the complaint registered by the bank management.

In the footage obtained from the closed-circuit television camera installed at the bank’s entrance, two men are seen overpowering the security guard and forcing themselves into the branch, while the remaining robbers are seen entering the bank afterwards.

Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Murad Ali Shah took notice of the incident and ordered the IG AD Khowaja to submit a report and immediately suspend the Girzi police station SHO Ubaidullah, according to a statement issued from CM House. The CM also directed the IG to make sure that all officers posted in police stations across the city remain vigilant about the security of their areas, the statement added.

Meanwhile, the IG has asked for an inquiry report from South DIG, directing him to make use of modern techniques in order to nab the culprits behind the robbery, a statement issued from the central police office read. South SSP Saqib Ismail Memon was contacted for further details on the incident, however, he was unavailable for comments.
