KARACHI: A massive traffic jam was reported on Korangi Road near Defence Housing Authority (DHA) and its surrounding areas on Tuesday afternoon following a protest by the family of a young man killed in an alleged encounter by the police.

Two suspects, identified as Nadeem and Abdul Rasheed, were injured and arrested after an exchange of fire when the police intercepted them near Defence Morr late Sunday night.

They were later shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where Nadeem succumbed to his injuries.

The deceased's family later claimed the body from the hospital and staged a protest on Korangi Road along with the body.

The family claimed that the police killed their loved one in a fake encounter and the police personnel responsible should be arrested and punished.

The deceased was a resident of Akhtar Colony and used to work at a shop in DHA's phase II. Nadeem was returning home when the police killed him in a fake encounter, alleged his family.

The protesters, however, ended the demonstration after the police assured them of their cooperation.

SHO Khalid Abbasi said that Nadeem and his accomplice were looting valuables from a passerby, identified as Abdul Wasey, when the police reached the site and attempted to arrest them. In order to escape, the suspects opened indiscriminate fire on the police officers.

The police had no criminal record of the suspected robber. Police high ups have ordered the initiation of an inquiry into the incident.
