MULTAN: A woman gave poison to her infant daughter and later committed suicide in Vehari on Sunday after a quarrel with their in-laws over not having a male child.

Police said Samira, a resident of Chak 271 of Tiba Sultan Pur, had an argument with her mother-in-law for not being able to give birth to a boy. As the argument escalated, the woman got disheartened.

She first forced her one-year old daughter named Ayesha to drink the poison and then consumed poison herself. While the child died on the spot, Samira was shifted to a nearby hospital in a critical situation. Police said the woman died later during treatment.

The Saddar Duniya Pur SHO said the case investigation was under way and all the family members would be interrogated.
