Pakistani student wins bronze at Microsoft Office championship
This was the explanation of Microsoft’s global #UpgradeYourWorld campaign given by the technology giant’s Country Manager Nadeem Malik.
Speaking at a press conference here on Monday, Malik explained that the campaign was an initiative to empower and provide support in education and other fields relating to development, such as NGOs.
The campaign centres round Windows 10, the latest version of the world’s most popular operating system.
Microsoft Pakistan Senior Technology Strategist Jibran Jamshed said the new operating system is a cross-platform, making it easier for users to adjust and for developers to produce applications which do not need to be individually rewritten for different types of devices.
He also gave demonstration of many of the new features, including collaborative work using the cloud, Skype or other means. The standout feature was the applied use of augmented reality-computer generated visual aids that can be used to assist in real life interactions, such as shopping or how to fix a leaky water pipe.
Later, Malik explained, “Microsoft is striving to unleash the economic and technological potential of Pakistan by creating fresh opportunities for our younger generation, thus making a positive impact in the country.”
He added “technology is an enabler at every level of society” and Microsoft Pakistan aims to “enrich the lives of our vibrant youth.”
Malik noted that although the company is striving globally to build alliances with governments, industries, academia and non-profits, many of which have been accomplished in other countries, in Pakistan, the only major alliance so far is with the Higher Education Commission (HEC), through which genuine Microsoft software is being given to varsities. “More collaborative projects are in the works.”

To a question, the country head noted that Pakistan is a leader in technology adoption and this is reflected in the reason why the campaign started in Bahawalpur and went through many rural and smaller towns before ending in a major city - Islamabad - rather than just touring the bigger cities.
